It’s good to be independent(Update 2)

If you read sites on the internet, you have probably heard of the “Internet Drama” going on with former Gamespot editor Jeff Gerstmann.

Eidos paid tons of money for a big advertising campaign for Kane and Lynch:Deadmen on Gamespot and they were not happy when they saw that Jeff slammed the game in his review. This lead to Gamespot parent company Cnet firing 10 year veteran Jeff Gerstmann. Jeff has yet to come out and speak about this supposed firing but this just goes to show how Money talks with these big mega companies.

I’m proud to be an Independent website such as Destructoid ,Gamertagradio, and Unscripted 360 just to name a few. Without saying any names I’ve had my experiences with a company/PR firm wanting to “Hype up” a bad game or force feed you(the readers) crap and I just can’t let it happen.

We’re not perfect and especially as Indies we try our best to stay faithful to you readers. If another Indie site wants to boost up review scores for games/money hey that’s them and I won’t judge them. But, I know The Xbox Domain hasn’t received any money from a company and I hope to keep it that way.

Going back to the headline I said “it’s good to be independent” because we don’t have to answer to anyone unlike these big gaming sites like Gamespot for example. If a game sucks, we say it sucks, END STORY.

Update 1- Yes, I know that none of this has been confirmed but if the pieces fit then the puzzle is complete. Also, parent company Cnet is not going to come out and say “Yup, we fired him” and look the bad guy. You think it also helps that the video review for Kane and Lynch:Dead Men was pulled? Something is up.

Update 2-Joystiq has posted some comments that they got out of Gerstmann. He talks about his future after his firing. The saddest quote from Jeff is “Losing a job you’ve held for over 11 years in an abrupt manner is shocking, yes”.

  5. *Takes $10,000 from Thrills under the table to keep quiet on the pinata porn ring*

  6. You can never forget that post huh Geo? It’s burned in your mind.

  7. For the record – Two Worlds is probably the best on that list, Vampire Rain was complete ass.

  8. Not that its burned in my mind, its I’m trying to keep Viva Pinata Porn as a popular search engine option.

None of this has been confirmed by anyone.

  16. That is true that none of it has been confirmed but what can you expect. Maybe he could have highlighted some of the better points “if it has any” and try to say that it isn’t the worst 6 out of 10 ever.

When I do a review I personally don’t like to give a game a bad review unless it just absolutely sucks, even without being paid “under the table” from Thrills. I don’t want people to think a game is all bad and if I give it a bad review I will make sure to highlight the fews things it did right (if any) and talk about how these aspects could have been improved.

It’s hard to say whether he was fired because of his review but the speculation and rumors seem to add up to something more than just coincidence.

  17. Exactly, none of it has been confirmed but more than enough people are saying it’s true. Also, Cnet is not going to come out and be the bad guy.

  18. Such bullshit on CNET’s part, I think I’ll pass on reading future GameSpot Reviews. May I point everyone towards Game Informer and Game Trailers. Good luck to Jeff on his future endeavors.
